Renewal of instructor certificate (FI renewal)
Guidelines for the renewal of instructor certificates in the categories FI(A) and FI(H).
To renew the instructor certificate, you must follow the requirements set out in FCL.940.FI. This means that you must complete refresher training at an approved training organization (ATO) and pass an Assessment of Competence (AoC).
Many instructors have several privileges included in their instructor certificate. This may include privileges to teach instrument flight, multi-engine or to provide instructor training. These are listed as FI(A) IR ME FI or FI(H) IR ME FI on your instructor certificate.
When you need to renew several such privileges, it is sufficient that you carry out one Assessment of Competence on the most advanced privilege you have valid. This means that if you have, for example, FI(A) IR ME FI, you only need to take an AoC for both multi and instrument instruction. Then the privileges for single-engine and instructor training will also be renewed, as long as the required class or type ratings are valid.
If the class or type ratings are not valid, you must renew them first. You must then pass a new AoC to renew your instructor privileges.
We remind you that you cannot combine an instructor AoC with other tests, such as skill tests or proficiency checks.
